#(f)mcm | Elias Veturius: An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

It is no secret that I fell in love with Sabaa Tahir’s debut novel An Ember in the Ashes. The world was dark and dangerous. It was wicked yet it was absolutely amazing. It really was a testament to Tahir’s writing style. It was insta-love the moment that I read that first chapter. One of the things I absolutely loved about the novel was Elias Veturius.

ember in the ashes

Laia is a slave. Elias is a soldier. Neither is free.

Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.

It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.

But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.

There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

Elias Veturius, heir of Gens Veturia, stole my heart and quickly made his way up my top ten fictional boyfriends. He’s currently my number 4. He is 6 feet 4 inches (oh my!). He is described as having golden brown skin, dark black hair, and pale gray eyes. Has he piqued your interest yet? Underneath the dark and rough look of the Mask, Elias is an actual sweetheart. However, he has to keep it hidden from the others in the Empire. He stands out in the Blackcliff Military Academy, not because he is the son of the Commandant, but because he is one of the best fighters. He is chosen to be an Aspirant, one of the potentials to become the future emperor. Yes, he’s that good. What I love most about Elias is that he strives to be different. In a world where brutality, violence, rape, and hatred is praised, Elias is an outcast. He believes and hopes for a better life. He is a person full of compassion in a world filled with cruelty. He has a beautiful soul. He’s smart and he’s a strategist. He is an amazing best friend and loves his family, his tribal family and grandfather at least.

If you don’t know who Elias Veturius is, then I urge you to read An Ember in the Ashes. He’s not the only reason to read that book actually. There are strong female characters in the book as well! But seriously, pick up a copy!

Who is your Fictional Man Crush this Monday?

#(f)mcm: Maxon Schreave from The Selection Series

selection elite the one heir

Hi bookworms! So as you may have seen, the past reviews I have posted up have been The Selection series! I finally finished The Heir last night and so I wanted to put on a special #(f)mcm post for Maxon Schreave! Rereading the series has made me fall in love with him all over again! I’ll be showing you some parts of each book where he stole my heart! I’ll be separating per book so you don’t have to worry about spoilers! If you haven’t read the book from the series, you can easily skip it! I had to cut down A LOT because there’s 4 books, I even had to cut my choices from his novella.

Top Moments Maxon won my Heart in The Selection:

1) He sincerely wants all the ladies during his Selection to be happy. He lets them leave if they don’t want to be there anymore and he lets America stay because it will help her family monetarily & to get away from Aspen.

I swear to you, I’ll make it to two and keep you here until then. I won’t make you leave a moment before I have to. Or the moment you’re ready. Whichever comes first. I know we just met, but I think you’re wonderful. And it bothers me to see you hurt. If he were here, I’d … I’d … I’m so sorry, America. -page 196

2) The little things he gives America: letting her go on walks outside even with the danger, he gives her jeans even when he lost the bet.

You ask for such simple things. I can’t deny you. But for my sake, only on Saturdays, please. Thank you for your company. Your friend, Maxon -page 147

3) When he finds out how bad the lower castes are suffering, he cut the compensation for the Selected so that the money could be allocated for food assistance.

I feel that no good leader can let the masses go unfed. Most of Illéa is comprised of these lower castes, and we have overlooked these people far too long. -page 242

4) How he’s never kissed anyone before America *faints*

I’m so sorry. I’ve never kissed anyone before. I don’t know what I’m doing. I’m just … I’m sorry America. -page 252

5) When he says things like:

If this were a simpler matter, I’d have eliminated every one else by now. I know how I feel about you. Maybe it’s impulsive of me to think I could be sure, but I’m certain I would be happy with you. -page 320

Top Moments Maxon won my Heart in The Elite:

1) When he throws a Halloween party for her, talks to her dad during the party, and asks her if she wants to hold one every October … and how she should see the princess suite and decorate it *swoon*

2) What he did for Marlee and Carter after they got caned

3) He stands up to his dad for America and took the abuse so that she would be spared

I was afraid that if he didn’t have me, he’d want you. (page 285) […] Please don’t cry darling. I’d spare you tears for the rest of your life if I could. (page 297)

Top Moments Maxon won my Heart in The One:

1) That he was genuinely happy that if he hadn’t been prince, he would’ve taken up photography making him a Five like America. -page 220

2) The letters he writes to America! So many letters! So beautiful!!

3) His first proposal. Oh. My! How he bought a house for her family nearby because he knows that she would it that way.

You told me to send everyone home. I did. I had to keep one other girl — those are the rules — but … you said that if I could prove I loved you … Of course it’s you. page 268

4) When he jumped in front of a bullet for America and everything he said afterwards *clutches my heart*

Break my heart. Break it a thousand times if you like. It was only ever yours to break anyway […] I’ll love you until my very last breath. Every beat of my heart is yours. I don’t want to die without you knowing that. […] She lives. Do you understand? Whatever it takes, she lives [to Aspen]. -page 295-296

5) His second proposal *cries*

I love you. I should have told you a long time ago. Maybe we could have avoided so many stupid mistakes if I hard. Then again, sometimes I think it was all those obstacles that made me love you so deeply. What I said was true. My heart is yours to break. As you already know, I’d rather die than see you in pain. In the moment I was hit, when I fell to the floor sure my life was ending, all I could think about was you. In those seconds, I was mourning everything I’d lost. How I’d never get to se you walk down the aisle toward me, how I’d never get to see your face in our children, how I’d never get to see the streaks of silver in your hair. But, at the same time, I couldn’t be bothered. If me dying meant you living, how could that be anything but good? America, I know you see a kind here, but let me be clear; this isn’t a command. This is a request, a please. I beg you; make me the happiest man alive. Please do me the honor of becoming my wife. -page 315-316

Top Moments Maxon won my Heart in The Heir:

This one was tough to find because he wasn’t a focal character but still there are some great moments!
1) When Maxon shopped for pianos with America

She loved to tell the story of how Dad made her pick out four brand-new pianos, each with various attributes, after they married. They were placed all over the palace. One was in her suite, a second in Dad’s, one here, and another in a largely unused parlor on the fourth floor. -page 43

2) How much he still really loves America and how you can see it with a look or how close he stands or how he talks about her or the way he holds her, just everything

If this was his retreat [the king’s suite that they usually share], why didn’t it feel like him at all? […] The reason Dad’s room didn’t feel like it was completely his was because it wasn’t. He had all but turned it into a shrine to Mom. Or rather, a shrine to the two of them and how deeply they loved each other. I saw it everyday, but it was different seeing the images they both looked at before falling asleep each night. They were meant to be, even after dozens of obstacles, and they liked to be reminded of it constantly. -page 338

3) How he believes in Eadlyn’s ability to run the country (even when we don’t haha) and how he wanted to rip Jack’s body apart after what he did to Eadlyn, and how close to tears he was when he was apologizing to Eadlyn for letting someone like Jack slip through the applications -page 192

2) When America has a heart attack and you literally feel his heart breaking

But the true fear of the moment was summed up in Dad. He clung to General Leger, holding on to him for dear life, his fingers digging int the back of his uniform. He was unabashedly crying, and I’d never heard such a painful sound. I hope I never would again.
“I can’t lose her. I don’t know … I don’t… […] I should have made her rest more I should have asked her for less. She did everything for me.” -page 239-240

Who’s your #(f)mcm? Do you love Maxon? What were some of your favorite Maxon moments?

#(f)mcm: Lucien from A Court of Thorns & Roses

Hi ya’ll! It’s Monday again. Does anyone else feel like the days are just breezing right past us? I do! Where did all the time go?! July is almost over but it feels as if it just started yesterday. It also feels like I haven’t done #(f)mcm in a long time! After changing my format, I decided I liked the changes I made to these posts so from now on, my #(f)mcm will be someone from a book I’ve read the past week!

Like I promised you, the main male characters from Sarah J. Mass’s A Court of Thorns and Roses will be making an appearance in this meme because … well, why not? They’re all pretty irresistible! You can read what I had to say about the leading man Tamlin here and the dark, dangerous, yet sexy Rhysand here! This week, I bring you the third man in this group: Lucien

Spoilers ahead (if you haven’t read ACOTAR):

  • *loses train of thought* um … yeah, just look at that picture that SJ pinned on her ACOTAR board (Click on the picture to go to her ACOTAR board). Yes, please.
  • That cute face with that fiery hair
  • He’s High Fae and could’ve been High Lord of the Autumn Court but he threw it all away for love — that unfortunately didn’t end well
  • He is Tamlin’s emissary and a loyal one at that!
  • He’s caring, extroverted, chatty, laid back, sweet when he wants to be, and fierce. He has faith in Tamlin and Feyre
  • He’s insanely strong after what his father and brothers did to him, along with what Amarantha did to him, to get back from all that, I commend him
  • He’s got a heart of stone haha a big one, that loves Feyre, Lucien, and people of his court
  • My favorite thing about our Lucien here is his sense of humor! He’s got jokes, sarcasm, and sass! I love his banter with Feyre — I call it my brotp!
I love all three (Tamlin, Lucien, & Rhysand) and they all have something different to offer! Do you love Lucien? I’m excited to see more of his presence in the upcoming books. This ends it with the crushable men in ACOTAR, but looking through SJ’s pinterest, it looks like she’s got more irresistible guys lined up for us! Who’s your #(f)mcm today? Let me know!

Blog Announcement:

Along with this post, I just wanted to let my readers know that I’ll be starting new posts on my blog called: Kiss, Marry, Kill. I think that at one point of another, we’ve all played this game! Once a week, I’ll try to post up 3 options for you to choose from and we’ll discuss! I’ve already got a good list written up of characters, with editions and everything, but if you have any suggestions, shoot me an email or comment! I’m all ears!xoxo

Today’s #(f)mcm: Rhysand & June Monthly Review

It’s Monday again! It’s also the end of another month! Halfway through the year and none of my resolutions are happening — not that I expected to actually follow them haha. This week’s #(f)mcm is none other than Rhysand from A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas!

Move over Tamlin, Rhysand is on the rise! Anybody can be a sweet beast like Tamlin but no one can be the dark and beautiful Rhysand. There may be some spoilers ahead

  • Rhys (pronounced Reese) is the epitome of Rhystall, dark, and handsome
  • Feyre describes him as the most beautiful man she’s ever seen — this is after meeting Tamlin so you can only imagine how gorgeous Rhys is!
  • He’s a High Fae with a deep sensual voice that lesser faeries fear
  • He’s the series’ bad-not-so-bad guy
  • He “radiated sensual grace and ease”. He’s got “short black hair [that] gleamed like a raven’s feathers, offsetting his pale skin and blue eyes so deep they were violet.” That spells out sexy
  • Underneath that dark and broody shell is an amazing fae, High Lord to the Night Court, and would do anything for his people and territory
  • Oh, and he’s got wings *hot, hot, hot*. He can literally fly in and save you! Picture is provided by Sarah J. Maas’s Pinterest. (Anyone else think of Castiel from Supernatural when Rhsyand showed his wings?!)

Don’t give up on this hottie yet! He might just surprise you — actually, he will surprise you! I can’t wait to see more of him!

#(f)mcm: Peter Kavinsky … again

Happy Monday! I’m in an extremely great mood and have been ever since I finished reading P.S. I Still Love You by Jenny Han. I even reread To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before this weekend. I hope you all had a great weekend and Father’s Day if you celebrate that!

To all the boys i've loved before PS I still love you

Like this post title suggests, my #(f)mcm to day is Peter Kavinsky! He’s been my choice before but after reading the sequel, my love for him has been renewed. Plus, there’s new things to fangirl about in P.S. I Still Love You. To make it different from my first post of Peter, I decided to do the Top Moments Peter Kavinsky won my Heart— in both books! This post can be spoilery, so if you haven’t read the book, maybe you shouldn’t read. Decision’s up to you.

Top Moments Kavinsky won my Heart in To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before

1) He tells Lara Jean he’ll save some firsts for the real thing

“Okay. Let’s just save some stuff, then […] We”ll save some stuff for you to do when it’s the real thing and not for show.” -Peter Kavinsky, p. 117

2) He ditches his 2-seater (sexy) Audi for his mom’s minivan to drive Kitty to school.

3) Instead of going to the party, he helps Lara Jean bake cupcakes for Kitty’s PTA

“You have flour all over your face,” he says, dusting off my cheeks with the backs of his hands. […] Peter hops off the stool and comes up to me and slides his hands around my waist and tries to untie my apron strings. -p. 173-143

4) How jealous he was about Lara Jean and Josh matching Harry Potter costume & then chases Lara Jean around the hall.

Peter: “Uh…don’t you think it’s weird for my supposed girlfriend to wear a couples costume with another guy?”

Lara Jean: “First of all, it wasn’t planned. Second of all, nobody cares what my costume is! Who would even notice something like that?”

Peter: “People notice. I noticed.”

Peter reaches out and tickles me, and I laugh so hard I almost drop my want. I dart away rom him but he pounces after me, pretend shooting webs at my feet. -p.229-231

5) How he is with Kitty — like when he danced with her. And what Kitty says about Peter & Lara Jean

Peter: “I’ll still see the kid around. I want joint custody.”

All I can think of is how patient he was with her, how sweet. -p. 235

“He definitely likes her,” Kitty agrees, her mouth full. “He … he looks at you a lot, Lara Jean. When you’re not paying attention. He looks at you, to see if you’re having a good time.” -p. 251

6) When he pushed his friends to eat the rice ball Lara Jean was trying to feed him (just read it)

Darrell hoots with laughter. “I’m jealous of you, Kavinsky. I wish I had a girl to feed me my lunch. Lara Jean, if he doesn’t take it, I will.” He leans forward and opens his mouth for me.

Peter shoves him to the side and says, “Step off, it’s mine!” -p. 240

7). All his notes to Lara Jean, especially:

1. Can you take the bus home today? I want to surprise Kitty and pick her up from school so she can show me and my car off to her friends. -p. 353

2. If you make Josh’s dumb white-chocolate cranberry cookies and not my fruitcake ones, it’s over. -p. 353

3. You look pretty today. I like you in blue. -p. 353

Top Moments Kavinsky won my Heart in P.S. I Still Love You

1) When he visits Lara Jean at night to cuddle

“Can we lie down, then?” he suggests.

I shove him in the shoulder. “Peter!”

“I just want to hold you for a little bit! If I was going to try to do more, I’d need more than seven minutes, trust me.” -p. 84

2) When he calls to say goodnight, even though he told her that he hated doing that when he was with Genevieve. -p. 109

gif3) When he got Kitty carnations and gave her a ride to school … sans Lara Jean

“You’re my only girl today, kid […] Don’t be jealous, Covey.” -Peter Kavinsky, p. 116

4) He gets her the freaking expensive antique necklace she wanted from his mom’s store for Valentine’s Day -p. 144

4) How immensely happy he was when Lara Jean brings him cookies and wears his jersey number on her cheek .

He grabs me and throws me in the air, his smile is so big. -p.197

5) How much he wants to protect Lara Jean’s reputation from that video.

“Don’t cry, Lara Jean. Please don’t cry. I promise you I’m going to fix this. […] Just trust me, okay? I promise I’ll take care of it.” -p. 53

“I’m gonna find whoever did this and kick their ass!” -p. 80

“I hate that I can’t protect you from this.” […] He feels like he has to make things right for me, and now he knows he can’t, and it’s killing him. -p. 149

I know he’s upset about not being able to protect me -p. 154

6) He tells Lara Jean that she’s his #1 *intense fangirling*

“I deserve better than than … I deserve to be someone’s number one girl.”

“You are.”

“No I’m not. She is. You’re still protecting her, her secret, whatever that is. From what, though? From me? What have I ever done to her?

“You took me away from her. You became my most important person.” (my note: just like kill me now). -p. 246

7) When he gives Lara Jean back her necklace and says:

“Wouldn’t look right on another girl […] When I get you back, I’m gonna put that necklace around you neck and pin you. Like the 1950s. Remember, Lara Jean?” -p. 327-328

8) I just love some of the things he says to Lara Jean

“It’s called playing hard to get! I’ve been waiting for you to call me, you dummy. It’s been six days” -p. 17

“Kiss me like you missed me.” -p. 21

“I respect you! I respect you more than any girl I know!” -p. 40

“Us. I did it for us. It’s you and me, kid.” -p. 59

“Sure. You’re the one driving this bus. You have been from the start. I’m still catching up.” -p.171

“All right, then we’ll wait. Whatever my girl wants.” -p. 172

“The purpose is I’m bored and I feel like kissing you. Is that a crime?” -p. 134

“Can we hug now? Can we never fight again?” -p. 216

“You have me, please just freaking tame me out already! I’m begging you. Come to my house right now, and I’ll let you sneak up to my room. I’ll be a sitting duck for you if it means I can see you again.” -p. 237

“Tell me what your wish is. Wish for anything, and I’ll give it to you, Lara Jean. All you have to do is ask.” -p. 328

“I think maybe I was scared. Of disappointing you. I know sec is a big deal to you. I didn’t want to mess it up. You’re so innocent, Lara Jean. And I have all this s–t in my past.” -p. 335

9) Finally. FINALLY. He says it. He freaking says it.

“You’re not my first,” Peter says. “But you’re the most special to me, because you’re the girl I love, Lara Jean […] I’ve been going crazy without you. Can’t we just –”

“You’re saying I drive you crazy too?

“I’m saying you drive me more crazy than any girl I’ve ever met.”

“In the contract, we said we wouldn’t break each other’s hearts. What if we do it again?”

“What if we do? If we;re so guarded, it’s not gong to be anything. Let’s do it f–ing for real, Lara Jean. Let’s go all in. No more contract. No more safety net. You can break my heart. Do whatever you want with it.-p. 336

Bonus: How he knew what Lara Jean wanted to eat in the movie theatre, how jealous he is of John Ambrose McLaren, how he still hung out with Kitty after they broke up, and how he knew which cake Lara Jean baked for the Spring Fair Cake Walk. Peter Kavinsky, you stole my heart.

Do you love Peter Kavinsky, too? What were you favorite Peter moments in the duology? Do we share any favorite moments? I know, I know. I have a lot. It was hard to narrow it down! Is he your #(f)mcm? Let me know below!

#(f)mcm: Tamlin from A Court of Thorns and Roses

fmcmHappy Monday (or not)! I’m not having the best Monday. It’s chores and job applying day. I found a position that I really want with the government-funded program Women, Infants, Children (WIC) as a nutrition educator. I’m really nervous about it. I hope I can get an interview and eventually the position.

Moving on — as you might know, last week I finished reading A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas! You can read my review here. Amazing book, by the way. I absolutely recommend it! Sarah J Maas has this incredible talent of conjuring up amazing male characters and so I introduce Tamlin!

Spoilers ahead (if you haven’t read ACOTAR):

  • He’s got beautiful blond hair and green eyes — Sarah J Maas liked Scott Eastwood as Tamlin — hello gorgeous
  • That drawing of Tamlin was pinned on SJ’s pinterest. (Click on the picture to go to her ACOTAR board).
  • He’s high fae and High Lord of Spring Court
  • He can shape shift and he’s known as one of the more powerful fae in Pythian
  • He’s loyal, fierce, caring, strong, protective, and smart
  • He’s got a heart of stone haha a big one, that loves Feyre, Lucien, and people of his court
  • That body though — can I get an amen? Haha
  • If it’s already not obvious, he’s sexy … is anyone thinking of the Fire Night celebration? *wiggles eyebrows*
  • He would get on his knees and beg, grovel for your life … if you were Feyre.
  • “I love you,’ he whispered, and kissed my brow. ‘Thorns and all.”
  • Enough said.
Do you love Tamlin too? Or do you like the witty Lucien more? Or maybe, you like taking a walk with the dark side with Rhysand? Honestly, I love them all. Who’s your #(f)mcm? Let me know below!

What are you planning to read this month? Are we reading any of the same books? Are you joining in Josephine @ Josie’s Book Corner read along of A Court of Thorns and Roses?

Mixing two posts into one: efficiency! Plus, I might forget to post my #(f)mcm like I have been for the past few weeks — oops. My #(f)mcm this week is tied to my upcoming post reviewing the film Cinderella!

May I introduce to you the Prince of my dreams since I first saw Cinderella when I was 5 years old. Yes, I was in love with the nameless Prince Charming. I always loved this fairy tale. It’s my favorite one and with the new live-action rendition of Cinderella, he is no longer nameless. Here is Prince Kit portrayed by Richard Madden! I love that this film actually gave him screen time and we got to see his personality. It now gives me a legit reason to love him unlike in the animated Cinderella. He’s swoon worthy! He’s sweet, determined, and kind. He seems like a fit King for his kingdom — we’d need a longer film to be sure of this.

robb starkIf Richard Madden was fictional, he’d be my #(f)mcm because … I mean did you not see that gif?! Just kidding. I also loved him as Robb Stark in the HBO show Game of Thrones! The Stark family is my favorite and aside from Jon Snow, he was my favorite brother. *Spoiler* I was devastated, not only because he was killed, but in the matter of his death. It was truly awful and gruesome. Thanks for that sir George R.R. Martin. *sobs* I like him as a prince/king, suits him well haha.

Who’s your #(f)mcm this week?! Let me know on the comments below!!

#(f)mcm: Prince Kaito

Happy Fictional Man Crush Monday, everyone! I feel like it’s been a long time since I’ve done this. It also feels like a long time since I’ve blogged on here. I’m really sorry about that. I’ve been in a weird funk lately. But I’m back and I’m here to introduce you to Prince Kaito of the Eastern Commonwealth.

cinder  scarlet  cress

We meet Prince Kai in Cinder by Marissa Meyer! You can also find him in Scarlet, Cress, and Winter. This one is precious. He’s got black hair and copper brown eyes. He dresses rather nicely (he is prince/emperor). He’s the man of everyone’s dreams in the Commonwealth. He is such an amazing leader to the Eastern Commonwealth. He fights to put his country and his people over himself. In doing so, he’s sacrificed so much in his life, his happiness. He’d do anything to get that cure for letumosis — even putting up with Queen Levana. He’s a strong leader and he doesn’t give himself enough credit for it.

One of my favorite things about Kai is his heart. He’s so kind and he always wants the best. He tries to see the positive in everything and tries to find the humor in situations. He was kind of a breath of fresh air. He wasn’t all too arrogant, snide, or holier-than-thou like some other princes can come off as. He also had a great relationship with his father. I’m glad that his father wasn’t a corrupt emperor and that Kai strived to rule his country as his father did before him. He’s sweet and loves that Cinder is just a mechanic. Kai has the cutest relationship with Cinder and that also gives him bonus points.

“Bending his head, Kai pressed his lips to her knuckles. The plating had no nerve endings, and yet the touch sent a tingle of electricity along her arm.
He lifted his gaze. “Just to be clear, you’re not using your mind powers on me right now, are you?”
She blinked. “Of course not.”
“Just checking.”
Then he slid his arms around her waist and kissed her.

Who love that he kept Cinder’s robotic foot? *cries* Who’s your #(f)mcm this week? Do you love Prince Kai, too? Or were you more a Wolfe or Captain Thorne kind of girl? (Thorne will be featured here in the future because I love him, too)
