Real Neat Blog Award

Hello again! I’m catching up on the awards that I’ve been nominated in. I’d like to thank Raven @ Dreamy Addictions for this sweet nomination: Real Neat Blog Award. It makes me want to say groovy haha.

The Rules:

  1. Thank and link the blogger who nominated you.
  2. Answer the 7 questions the nomination has provided.
  3. Nominate 7 other bloggers
  4. Create 7 questions for your nominees.

Raven’s Questions for Me:

1. Tell me about someone you really admire?

My older sister. She has been my role model for the longest time. I look up to her and all (aww). She really sets a great example for my brothers and I. She’s selfless and always in a good mood and very optimistic.

2.What did you want to be when you grew up?

A teacher. A pediatrician. An architect. A veterinarian. A dietitian. I, at one point in my life, have wanted to be one of these haha. Very complicated when I got to college.

3.If you could have any job, what would you want to do/be?

Right now, I’d love to be a teacher haha. I’m tutoring and it’s a lot of fun teaching. It would be cool to teach health sciences. If there’s a job to read and review books and run a blog, then I’d pick that one actually.

4. What type of music you like most and name any three of your favorite new tracks?

I’m really random when it comes to music but usually rock or Christian music. Favorite new tracks: Shots by Imagine Dragons, Prince of Peace by Hillsong United, and Can’t Feel My Face

5.Book that made you cry and a book that made you laugh out loud?

A book that made me cry? Too many haha but I’ll go with my usual answer: Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare. (You can click here to see my list of books that made me cry). I laughed so much when I was reading Blackmail Boyfriend by Chris Cannon

6.What did you do for your last birthday?

I honestly can’t remember .. must’ve not been that good. Oh! Oh! I remember now haha. I had lunch with my friends and we went kayaking — hmm I guess it was good, I just have bad memory haha

7.What inspires you?

Selfless people inspire me. The kid I like inspires me!  My sister inspires me. Books that have great messages inspire me. You inspire me 😉

My Questions for You:

  1. What was your favorite read in July?
  2. Which book release are you anticipating the most?
  3. Other than reading, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
  4. What’s your favorite TV show?
  5. Which book character do you relate to the most?
  6. Pick your book boyfriend … just one! (No cheating like having a fantasy boyfriend and a contemporary boyfriend haha)
  7. Are you currently crushing on anyone (not a book character)? Tell me about them. (Sorry I’m in a lovey-dovey mood!)

My nominations:

Carolyn @ A Hundred Thousand Stories
Cristina @ My Tiny Obsessions
Erika & Miedjel @ Partners in Books
Laura @ Once Upon a Bookshelf

Blogger Recognition Award

I’d like to extend my biggest and warmest thanks to some of the best bloggers I’ve met in the blogosphere! Thank you Josie @ Josie’s Book Corner and Raven @ Dreamy Addictions for this wonderful nomination and recognition! If you guys hadn’t nominated me, I would have definitely nominated you because you not deserve this award!

  1. Select 15 other blogs you want to give the award to. Do some digging if you must! Find those blogs. You cannot nominate yourself or the person who has nominated you.
  2. Write a post to show off your award! Give a brief story of how your blog got started, and give a piece or two of advice to new bloggers. Thank whoever nominated you, and provide a link to their blog. List who you’ve nominated in the post.
  3. Comment on each blog and let them know you’ve nominated them. Provide a link to the award post you created.
  4. Provide a link to the original post on Edge of NightThat way, anyone can find the original guidelines and post if needed, and we can keep it from mutating and becoming confusing!

My Story:

I originally started blogging with my friend Veronica over at The Talking Bookworm. I was a junior writer in her blog. She’s more of a contemporary reader and I read more of the science fiction and fantasy. She enlisted me to her blog to add more diversity in her book reviews. After a year and several months, I started thinking about having my own blog. I’ve tried vlogging but it wasn’t for me. I’m not a camera person haha. Then I started thinking about Veronica’s blog and what kind of features that I would have if I had my own blog.

It spiraled from there. My idea sparked into a tangible thing and I started doing research on the best sites and so on. I was really worried because being a junior writer is a lot different from being the founder and primary writer of a blog. Did I want all that responsibility? Did I have the time? What happens when I don’t have time for my blog? What if no one cares to even look at my blog? Will my voice be heard? It was a lot of thinking and I pretty much just sucked it up. I really wanted to do this, have my own space that I can control and let my thoughts run through. I just wanted a blog where I can talk to people who loved the same books as I did. I wanted a blog where I can reach out to people and maybe get them to read a book that they never thought of looking it. Because of my extreme desire for all that, I threw away my worries and started my own blog.

I haven’t looked back ever since. I’m not going to lie to you. Sometimes it’s hard. Sometimes I’m going through a reading slump and have no reviews to offer my readers but I have yet to be discouraged. The people I’ve met in the blogosphere are some of the nicest, smartest, and most accepting people in the world. It doesn’t matter if we’re extremely different and disagree with each other’s opinions, no one judges and treats anyone else differently.

My Two Cents:

There’s really no perfect way to blog. Everyone is different and you do what’s comfortable to you! I guess that would be my first advice haha. Be yourself in the blogging world. Don’t hide or make up a fake person — no one likes that. Just be genuinely you! Everyone wants to hear your voice. No one wants to see a carbon copy. Something that also stems from this is be involved! Go and check out blogs and take the time to comment — not just ‘Hey check out my blog’ but show that you took the time to read someone’s posts and the thoughts that they’re putting up.

Have fun with blogging! Being in this blogging world is supposed to relieve stress and network you to people who love what you love. Don’t stress out about it. If you’ve got a lot of things going on, then schedule posts ahead of time. That’s what I do. If I’m going to have a particularly loaded week ahead of me, I load up on scheduled posts! I do this by staying organized. I have a Lilly Pulitzer planner (best thing ever) and it comes with 2 monthly view calendars so I can have one for my blog and another for my personal/work life. It’s awesome!

The Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award

sisterhood-of-the-world-bloggers-award11Award Details:

Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award is an award that recognises the unique voices of women (and men?!) across the world and I feel quite overwhelmed at having been nominated for it. Thank you Joey @ Thoughts and Afterthoughts for nominating me! You’re the best! Sorry I only got to this now haha.

These are the five rules to follow:

  1. Thank the blogger who nominated you, linking back to their site.
  2. Put the Award logo on your blog.
  3. Answer the ten questions sent to you.
  4. Make up ten new questions for your nominees to answer.
  5. Nominate ten blogs.
1) Is there any author or book that you collect and will always welcome multiple editions of the same title?

Yes! I have multiple copies of The Infernal Devices trilogy by Cassandra Clare, Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas, and Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan. I haven’t started on it yet, but I’m planning on getting more copies of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and P.S. I Still Love You by Jenny Han and Cinder by Marissa Meyer

2) Say that you find yourself judging a book by its cover (not that we ever do that!); what sort of covers do you go for? Are there any that are an absolute turn off?

Anything I find pleasing to the eye. Yeah, not specific at all lol. But I’ve gotten books for their color, especially the bright blue/green turquoise colors or salmon/pink colors. I’d also get books with a lot of different colors. I don’t like those book covers that usually grace romance novels, with the half-dressed man and a woman that’s draped over him. No thanks.

3) Is there any book to movie adaptation that you simply refuse to watch? No way, no how, you’re not even giving them the opportunity to mess it up?

I’m game when it comes to movie adaptations. I’ll watch anything and I try not to be too critical and have high expectations.

4) What is the most unusual book you’ve ever read? (Plot, writing style, chapter layout, etc?)

I’d have to say Perfume by Patrick Suskind. I had to read it for high school. It was unusual to say the least. It’s a story of a murderer who was born without a scent, so he grows up wanting to have his own scent. So what does he do? He works at a perfume shop and kills women, takes their skin, and distills it to make a perfume out of it. I mean, can it be any more unusual? Yes. *spoilers ahead* There’s a massive orgy in the end during his trial and then he gets eaten alive. WTF?!

5) You get a $500 gift card for all things bookish – do you run to your nearest bookstore and spend like a fiend? Or do you create pro/con lists (à la Rory Gilmore) to make sure you get just the right & perfect & wonderful bookish things? Or are you eyeing a particularly expensive bookcase somewhere?

I would make a list of books that I absolutely need to get, save some for pre-orders/future books. As for bookish things, I’d get a couple of bookmarks (I love collecting them). I’ll probably need a new bookshelf, too. Oh! I’ve wanted these bookends! I would totally get them, they’re The Hobbit themed bookends, where one side, Bilbo is looking through his door and the other side Gandalf is standing on the other side of the door. So pretty!

6) What book did you like that everyone hated?

I liked Allegiant (Divergent #3) by Veronica Roth. I didn’t love it love it, but I liked it. I thought that it was a justifiable ending and something that the characters would’ve done. I also really liked Requiem (Delirium #3) by Lauren Oliver. So much hate for that book because of Alex and I shouldn’t get into that now haha. Also because that ambiguous ending.

7) You can only take 3 things from your burning house, what things would you take?

After getting my family out of the burning house, if I can still go back to grab three things, I’d get (1) my laptop, (2) important documents, i.e passports, birth certificate, so on, and (3) nothing else really important that I can’t easily replace. I would be trying to throw all my books and anything else out of the window to save as many as I can haha.

8) If you could switch places with any fictional character, who would it be?

I was thinking Tessa from The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare because she has Will but then I wouldn’t want to be immortal and face the deaths of all my loved ones. So, I’ll settle for being Lara Jean from To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and P.S. I Still Love You by Jenny Han because she gets Peter Kavinsky and she’s just a junior in high school. There’s so many things I’d love to change if I could go back to my junior year lol.

9) What book were you “forced” to read in high school but ended up loving?

A bunch! My program picked some pretty good books to read:

  • To Kill A Mockingbird by Lee Harper
  • City of the Beasts by Isabel Allende
  • Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier
  • Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger
  • Hamlet by William Shakespeare
  • A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams
  • The Crucible by Arthur Miller
  • A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen
  • The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
  • Perfume by Patrick Suskind
  • Fiela’s Child by Dalene Mathee
  • The House of the Spirits by Isabelle Allende

Woah didn’t realize how many books they made us read in my program haha. These aren’t even all of them.

10) What made you cry like a baby?

A lot of things make me cry like a baby. I cry easy. If I ever see a guy crying, I end up crying. I cry when I see people visit cemeteries. I cry when a widowed father is left taking care of his daughters and he puts them above everything. I cry when people at my church get baptized. I cry when I read about heartbreaks and then cry when they’re reunited. I cry when a main character’s family member dies because then I think about my family and how I’d feel if it happened to me. I cried like a baby for days when my sister got married and moved out because I missed her so much. I cry when I think about Jesus. I’m a cry baby.

My Questions for my Nominees:
  1. What is your absolute number one favorite book ever? — I know, I know, really tough questions. If you have to, you can separate by genres
  2. If a book character can come to life and run for office, who would you want as President (King/Queen, Prime Minister, or whichever governing leader your country has) and why?
  3. Think of all the dystopian books you’ve read. Which dystopian world would you rather be a part of?
  4. Channeling Rick Riordan, who would be your godly parent? They could be Greek (Percy Jackson), Roman (Heroes of Olympus), Egyptian (Kane Chronicles), or Norse (Magnus Chase) and why?
  5. What is your biggest bookish pet peeve?
  6. Do you want a job/career in the book industry? What would you want to do?
  7. If you could already have a book that hasn’t been released yet, which would you pick?
  8. If you had to be a supernatural/fantasy being, what would you choose (witch, vampire, angel/nephilim/shadowhunter, werewolf, faerie, alien, grisha, pegasus (haha), demigod, mermaid, etc)?
  9. Why do you love reading?
  10. Recommend a book that isn’t popular and deserves a bigger following.
I nominate:

1. Veronica @ The Talking Bookworm
2. Olivia @ Fluttering Pages
3. Laura @ Laura’s Tea Time Reads/Once Upon a Bookshelf

My favorite book is Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare! I’d be friends with Tessa because we have so much in common — like being in love with Will Herondale. Haha just kidding, not really, but… yeah.

Which movie based on a book do you like the best?
I loved Catching Fire the most! It was fantastic!

What is the worst book you have read?
I don’t know. It wasn’t the worst but I didn’t particularly enjoy Uglies by Scott Westerfeld or The Iron King by Julie Kagawa.

If you could meet any character from any book, and punch them in the face, who would it be and why?
Ooooh okay, either Levana from The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer or King of Adarlan from Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas because they’re both evil, sadistic, sociopathic, nutcases who don’t care who they hurt and how, as long as it benefits them. Oh! I’m adding Amarantha in here from A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas.

Who is your book crush?
WILL HERONDALE! *cries* He’s number one but I have a top 10 list haha

If it was done PERFECTLY and ACCURATELY, I’d say Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas.

I won’t be nominating anyone because I have before but if you’d like to answer the questions, you’re more than welcome! Everyone deserves the Liebster Award!

Creative Blogger & Liebster Award

Happy Thursday! In the past week, I was nominated for 2 awards by a couple of people. I’ll be starting with The Creative Blogger Award! Thank you to Sam @ Bellsiebooks and Jay @ The Wolf of Starbucks for their nomination!

How it works:

  1. Nominate 15-20 blogs and notify all nominees via their social media/blogs.
  2. Thank and post the link of the blog that nominated you (very important).
  3. Share 5 facts about yourself to your readers.
  4. Pass these rules on to them.

Five Facts About Me:

1. I’ve done so many (okay, not so many but enough) of these that I feel like I’m running out of facts about myself.
2. I’m currently listening to Hillsong Young & Free’s album This Is Living. It’s on repeat and I’m in love.
3. I love Cracker Barrel (this southern restaurant that serves the best breakfast all day — not sure if it’s everywhere else).
4. I re-organize my bookshelves every couple of months.
5. Watermelon and Mango are my favorite fruits.

For the Liebster Award, I’d like to thank Melanie @ Reviews of a Self Proclaimed Bibliophile and H. Taylor @ Inkorkeys for this nomination! Please follow these wonderful people who nominated me for both awards! They’re all fabulous!

The Rules

  • Thank the person who nominated you and link their blog.
  • Give your readers 11 random facts about yourself.
  • Answer the 11 questions from the blog who nominated you.
  • Nominate 11 bloggers to receive this award.
  • Come up with 11 questions for your nominees!

6. (I’m continuing from the facts from Creative Blogger Award because I’m not lying, I can’t think of more facts about me that you don’t already know.) I was 5 years old when my family moved to USA from Philippines. *Filipinos represent!*
7. When I was in the 10th grade, I seriously contemplated dropping out of school and running away.
8. Other than bookstores, I love going to arts & crafts stores like Michaels and Jo-Ann Fabrics. I love to scrapbook and make personalized cards!
9. I graduated college as Magna Cum Laude with a 3.87 GPA. Yup, I was 0.03 points away from Summa Cum Laude. This will forever hurt me.
10. I hate red roses. I feel like they’re so cliché — any other color is fine, especially yellow or pink roses. My favorites flowers are tulips, carnations, and gerberas!
11. I love playing Animal Crossing, Tomodachi Life, and Harvest Moon on my Nintendo 2DS (I wish I had a 3DS because larger screen!)

Questions from Melanie:

1.  If you could live in any single fictional universe, which would it be and why?
I’d really like to live in Narnia! It’s just so beautiful there! (Hello New Zealand!) Plus, I’d love to meet Aslan!

2.  Tell us your favorite and least favorite book to movie adaptations.
Least favorite is easy: Twilight (just, no!) I’ve got a couple of favorites. I really loved Catching Fire, If I Stay, and The Book Thief.

3.  Tell us the story of a favorite book that didn’t start out as a favorite.
Harry Potter lol it’s my favorite now but when I started The Sorcerer’s Stone the first time, I couldn’t get through it until I watched the movie. Now I love it!

4.  If you were part of the world of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 and assigned one book to memorize, which book would you hope was chosen for you?
Oh man, tough questions, tough questions. I never read Fahrenheit 451 but I should. A book to memorize? I have this book. It’s called Bright Star by John Keats. It’s a compilation of poems and letters that her wrote to his loved one. It’s beautiful.

5.  Favorite sports team?
San Antonio Spurs!!! And if you know about basketball, you know the whole Spurs vs Heat rivalry. So you can imagine all the crap I get about being a Spurs fan and living in Miami.

6.  Name a song that makes you smile anytime you hear it.
Crap. So many songs. I’ll settle with “I Will Wait For You” by Us (Michael Alvaro and Carissa Rae-Alvaro)

7.  Do you play any instruments and if not, what is an instrument you have always wanted to learn?  Even if you play an instrument, what is another one you have wanted to learn?
I don’t play anymore. I was learning guitar and piano but then I stopped. I wish I didn’t. I still want to learn. I also want to learn how to play the violin — it’s so beautiful. Oh! And drums! I’d love to play the drums.

8.  If you could visit or live in a historical time period, which would you choose and why?
I’d like to visit — not live in — the Revolution era in the US and be part of the Boston Tea Party and dump some tea overboard. I don’t know why.

9.  Based upon your experiences with education, what is the most important change you wish to see?
There needs to be more teachers who really care about their students’ success. Teachers who go above and beyond and out of their way to help students. That and teacher’s getting paid more.

10.  What is your most recently watched item on Netflix?
Supernatural. I still need to catch up. I’m not even close to finishing season 6

Questions from H. Taylor:

1. What is your first memory of reading a book/having a book read to you?
I think Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White

2. Which book have you re-read more than 3 times? If any?
All the books in The Infernal Devices trilogy by Cassandra Clare

3. Have you always liked to read?
Not always. I remember hating in elementary school where they forced us to read and keep a reading log. I would always make up books and pages I read that day.

4. What are you currently reading?
I am reading In the Afterlight by Alexandra Bracken and an ARC copy of The Truth About Jack by Jody Gehrman

5. How long is your “to-read” pile?
Over 200 something books. Not as long as other people’s pile

6. How do you prefer to buy your books? In store or online?
Online is usually cheaper so I go for that. But if the store was cheaper, I definitely prefer that. I love going into bookstores and picking my copy.

7. A book that you hate with a passion? And why?
I don’t think I’ve come across a book that I hate with a passion but a couple that I’m just not in love with such as, Matched by Allie Condie (great concept but storyline was a little weak), The Iron King by Julie Kagawa (I didn’t like the concept of fae — but that might be different now), and Fallen by Lauren Kate (not the best nephilim book I’ve read). I have problems with them but yeah, not hate. Oh! New Moon by Stephenie Meyer

8. Favourite classic?
Nope. Too hard. Too many. So I’m just going to list a couple. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams, Hamlet by William Shakespeare, A Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood, The Crucible and All My Sons by Arthur Miller, and The Giver by Lois Lowry

9. Do you prefer your books to have a happy ending?
I usually do. Actually, I almost always do but I appreciate the realistic ending, happy or not, open-ended or not.

10. What is a book or series you cherish above all others?
Above all others … there’s two: The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare and Throne of Glass Series by Sarah J Maas.

11. Have you ever bought a book you didn’t want anyone to know about or see you reading?
No I don’t think so

  11. I had a dream once that I had a pet crocodile that acted like a puppy and when I woke up, I was really sad that it wasn’t true.

I’d either read The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare or Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas.

Probably Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White because it’s like the first book I remember reading?

6. If you could live in any book world, what would it be? (Again, excluding Harry Potter)
Mmmmmmmm … probably Narnia

Hi y’all! I am so excited to be nominated, not only once but twice, for the Versatile Blogger award! Thank you Tiffany @ The Bookish Thought and Anna @ The Bookister for the nominations! I didn’t have time when to do the post when I first got nominated but now I do! Yay!

How It Works

  • Share 10 random facts about yourself
